Joyce Alverta Bloom

Poland - Services were held Saturday, September 11, 2021 at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland for Joyce Alverta Bloom, 92, who passed away at home on Tuesday, August 31, 2021.

Joyce was born March 27, 1929 in Scranton, PA, to Richard Rowlands and Mary Sherman Rowlands Canterbury.

She was a 1947 graduate of West Scranton High School. After graduation, she went to work in the business office of the International Correspondence Schools (ICS) in Scranton. It was there that she met and fell in love with Robert D. Bloom. They were married October 6, 1950 in Scranton. Robert and Joyce then moved to Youngstown where Robert worked as a mailer for the Youngstown Vindicator for 50 years.

Joyce was a member of the Guild of the International Typographical Union, the Saxon Club, The Youngstown Garden Forum, and Nu-Shoots Garden Club. She won several ribbons for her floral arrangements at Garden Forum competitions.

After Robert's retirement, Joyce and Robert traveled to Europe, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean and Caribbean as well as throughout the United States visiting many national parks and Alaska and Hawaii.

She was a member of Poland United Methodist Church.

Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 68 years when Robert passed away on May 22, 2018.

She leaves her son, Kristian Robert (Sara Ogan) Bloom of Columbia, MO and her daughter, Cynthis Bloom (Peter) DeVito of Poland. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Patrick Robert (Sarah Canon) Bloom of Scott Air Force Base, IL, Michael James Bloom of Columbia, Conner Flynn (Sasha Rowles) Bloom of Abilene, TX, Cooper Brendan (Laurel Critchfield) Bloom of Overland Park, KS, Beatrice Bloom (Nicholas) Olesko of Ithaca, NY, Peter Michael DeVito of Tucson, AZ and Robert George DeVito of Charlottesville, VA; two great-granddaughters, Amelia Bloom Olesko of Ithaca and Violet Elizabeth Bloom of Overland Park; a sister, Esther Canterbury Hanstein of Scranton; one nephew; and two nieces.

Besides her husband and her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her brother, Morgan James Canterbury.

The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of the Inn at Poland Way for the kind and loving care Joyce received while she resided with them. Additional thanks and gratitude are given to Dr. Armand Minotti and Dr. John J. Stefancin for their excellent care.
