Poland-Joyce M. Cleland passed away on Friday, November 29, 2024 at The Woodlands Assisted Living at the age of 88.
Joyce was born on June 10, 1936 in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of George and Sarah (Joyce) Schwille.
A lifelong area resident, Joyce was a 1954 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She married Ray Cleland on June 30, 1956, and together they raised their sons Mike and Dennis in Boardman. Ray preceded Joyce in death in 1992. Their children meant the world to them, and they took immense joy in attending their sporting events.
Passionate about her work, Joyce began her career with WKBN in Youngstown as a switchboard operator. She then took a position at Sparkle Market where she became head cashier, retiring after 25 years. After retirement, she worked for several years at the Boardman YMCA.
Everyone who knew Joyce knew how much she loved her friends and her card group. She had a comedic personality, but she had no idea she was funny! She loved to walk and could be found walking to work for 25 years or walking the neighborhood after retirement. Above all, she enjoyed being with her family.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Michael (Jaimie) Cleland and Dennis (Tracy) Cleland; her grandchildren, Rachael Cleland, Michael (Lena) Cleland, Megan Cleland, Matt Cleland, and Aubree (Jeremy) Sherbourne; and great-grandchildren, James, Marc, Hudson, Adelyn, Joshua, and Axel.
A private graveside service will be held for the family at Lake Park Cemetery with Rev. Adam Rodgers officiating.
The family would like to express their appreciation and thank The Woodlands Assisted Living staff for the wonderful care they gave Joyce and loving her like family.
Memorial tributes may take the form of contributions to Joyce's church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Dr., Boardman, OH 44512, or to Angels for Animals, 4750 W. South Range Rd., Canfield, OH 44406, in honor of Joyce's love of animals, especially dogs.
Arrangements are being handled by the Davis-Becker Funeral Home. Please visit www.beckerobits.com to share memories and condolences with the family.
