Boardman - Joseph J. Phillips, 93, died early Tuesday morning, November 15, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Joseph, affectionately known by family and friends as "Joe," was born July 2, 1923 in Youngstown, a son of Joseph and Goldie Boros Phillips.
A lifelong area resident, Joe attended Scienceville High School. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 377 and was a cement truck driver for Boardman Supply, retiring in 1980.
He was a proud United States Army veteran, serving stateside during World War II. He was assigned to the Tank Destroyer Unit, which trained soldiers to use the half track vehicles.
A car enthusiast, Joe's passion and hobby was antique cars. He enjoyed taking his car collection to shows and parades, both locally and across the states over the years. Joe was a 50 year member of Hudson Essex Terraplane Western Reserve Chapter and a charter member of the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club.
His wife, the former Roberta McMaster, whom he married June 27, 1959, preceded him in death on November 24, 1981. He is survived by two children, Xandra Papa of Boardman and Roger (Eloise) Phillips of Vidor, TX; brother, Ernest Phillips of Florida; six grandchildren, Andrea (Brian) Stamp of Boardman, Jeff (Lysa) Papa of Cross River, NY, Eric (Danielle) Papa of Boardman, Brittany Phillips of Vidor, Tiffany (Joe) Magee of Vidor, and Kristi Kessler of Victoria, TX; and 10 great grandchildren, Zachary, Bekah, Anthony, Mykel, Sophya, Julian, Hayden, Paxton, Jayden, and Kayden.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Anthony "Tony" Papa.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market Street, Boardman. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday from 10-11:45 a.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service.
Memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Joe's name to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Boardman, Ohio 44512.
The family would like to thank Joe's family physician, Dr. Robert Spratt, for the years of wonderful care he gave to Joe.
