Strongsville - Joseph Pennell, 92, formerly of Youngstown, died Friday afternoon, January 23, 2015 at the Southwest Commons Assisted Living in Strongsville, where he has been living for the past six years.
Mr. Pennell was born February 8, 1922 in Youngstown, a son of Leroy and Bernetta Hennessy Pennell.
He was a 1941 graduate of The Rayen School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War II until being honorably discharged in 1945. Upon his discharge, he attended Youngstown College on a GI Bill.
Joseph married the former Alice Wallerius on August 12, 1950. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Indiana for a short time before Joseph accepted a position with Wean United Engineering, bringing them back to Youngstown. Mr. Pennell was employed by the company as a timekeeper until his retirement.
He was a long time former member of Christ United Presbyterian Church and also attended the Western Reserve United Methodist Church. Mr. Pennell was also a member of the F&AM Wick Lodge #481 of Youngstown and the Aut Mori Grotto. His interests included working in his yard, planting his vegetable garden, and walking in and enjoying Mill Creek Park.
His wife, Alice, preceded him in death on November 1, 2008. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Jo (Eric) Brill of Boardman; son, Robert (Lori) Pennell of Strongsville; and four grandchildren, Erica, Eliot, Amy, and Natalie Pennell.
In addition to his parents and wife, Joseph was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Pennell.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., with Pastor Russ Adams officiating.
Family and friends will be received Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service.
