Youngstown - Joseph W. Miner, 57, died unexpectedly Sunday evening, March 30, 2014 at his home.
Joe was born March 1, 1957 in Youngstown, a son of William Miner and Phyllis Rossi Evans.
He was a 1975 graduate of Struthers High School and lettered in basketball while playing for the Wildcats. Joe was currently employed as a craneman for Vallourec Star for over 20 years. Prior to Vallourec Star, he worked for Youngstown Sheet & Tube, A Tech, and Hydrill.
He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary and a social member of the Struthers VFW No. 3538. Mr. Miner enjoyed golfing and belonged to numerous leagues, including heading his work league for several years at the Mahoning Country Club. In August of 2009, Joe had a hole-in-one and back to back eagles at Bedford Trails Golf Course. Joe also belonged to several bowling leagues over the years and bowled at the Holiday Bowl and the Bowl-A-Drome. An avid sports fan, Joe enjoyed all Ohio sports teams, and following the Struthers girls basketball team and McDonald's football and basketball teams.
Joe will always be remembered as a man with a wonderful sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh and his sense of humor could brighten anyone's day.
In addition to his mother, Phyllis Evans of Struthers, Joe leaves his wife, the former Jill Grine, whom he married September 6, 1991; two sons, Philip (Jamie Pack) Miner of Youngstown and Joseph (Jenna) Miner of Virginia Beach; brother, Larry (Pam) Miner of Youngstown; sister, JoAnn (David) Anzelmo of Austintown; brother-in-law, David Grine of New Castle; nephews and niece, Larry (Jamie Hale) Miner II, William (Melissa) Miner, Kalah (John) Ragan, and David, Alex, and Jordan Anzelmo; two great nephews, John Ragan Jr. and Jack Miner; and Natalie Pack, who referred to him as her "Big Papa Joe" and a granddaughter who Joe was anxiously awaiting her arrival in September.
He was preceded in death by his father.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers. Entombment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
