Poland - Joseph E. Carter, 85, died early Friday morning, October 2, 2015 at Hospice of the Valley's Hospice House, surrounded by family.

Mr. Carter was born October 12, 1929 in Youngstown, a son of the late Joseph and Mary Pascarella Carter.

Raised in Youngstown, he was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Youngstown College and Kent State University. He briefly worked for Metropolitan as an insurance salesman and Dunn & Bradstreet as a credit reporter, before taking a position with Youngstown Sheet & Tube in the accounting department from 1958-1972. In 1972, he began working in electronic sales, working with various distributors, until his retirement in 1993.

Mr. Carter served in the United States Navy Reserves from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1958.

He was a member of the Poland United Methodist Church, past president of the Poland Booster Club, and a former volunteer fireman for the Poland Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Carter enjoyed cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes, golfing, and playing cards with friends. He will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and storytelling.

He is survived by his wife, the former Josephine Perline, whom he married June 26, 1954; three sons, Richard (Lynn) Carter of Poland, Robert (Christine) Carter of Columbus, and Ronald (Cindy) Carter of Youngstown; five grandchildren, Amanda, Travis, Cameron, and Timothy Carter, and Patrick (Kelsey) Smith; and a great-grandson, Jaxon Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Gifford.

A memorial service will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Poland United Methodist Church with Pastor Michael Grant and Mr. and Mrs. Carter's nephew, Rev. Kenneth Gifford officiating. Interment will be at Poland Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial tributes may take the form of contributions in Mr. Carter's name to the Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Rd., Poland, Ohio 44514.
