John A. Viggiano

d. December 16, 2017

John A. Viggiano, 79, of Poland died peacefully Saturday December 16, 2017 at the Hospice House in Poland. John was born October 12, 1938 in New Castle, Pa., a son of Michael and Mary (Bloise) Viggiano and was a lifelong area resident.

After graduating from South High School in 1956, John served two years in the Army as a medic. He went on to work at General Motors retiring after thirty years.

John had a love of sports that began at an early age, playing little league ball for the first team in Youngstown. He played Class B and AA ball and was scouted by several major league teams. Throughout the years he remained an avid Yankees fan. Golf was also one of the sports John loved and while on vacation in Florida, he got his first hole-in-one.

After his retirement, John mastered the art of wood carving. His artistic ability was amazing and there are many pieces that his family and friends love that will always bring joy and fond memories. Singing was also a passion. Weddings would not have been as special had he not given his cherished voice to the ceremony. He also sang with the Mahoning Valley Choral, formally the Seraphine Chorus. He also sang in the choir at Holy Family Parish in Poland where he was a member.

Besides his wife of 55 years, the former Mary Ann Butcher, he leaves his children, Jill (Frank) Lushinsky, Marc (Tammy) Viggiano, and Jena (Jim) Hoover; his grandchildren, Morgan, Jared, Gabbi, Nina, Olivia, and Allison, all of Columbus, Ohio; his brothers, James (Jean) , and Joseph (Marge) both of Youngstown, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial mass to celebrate John’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 29, 2017 at Holy Family Church in Poland. A luncheon will follow in the parish center.

Arrangements are by the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland.
