Poland - John Halliday Stone, 97, of Poland, died Thursday morning at Woodlands Assisted Living.
Mr. Stone was born December 16, 1919 in Belmont, MA, a son of Joseph and Mina Halliday Stone.
He graduated from Stony Brook High School in Stony Brook, NY, attended Brown University, and was a graduate of Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program.
Mr. Stone enlisted in the US Navy in 1940 and met and married Olive Katherine "Bunte" Mauthe in New London, CT in 1942. During his service in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres aboard the USS Nicholas as a gunnery officer, he received the Battle Star, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Bronze Star with Valor at the Battle of Kula Gulf. After his discharge from the US Navy with the rank of LT. Commander, he worked for US Steel from 1945-1947 before joining Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company where he worked until his retirement in 1978. Mr. Stone worked in several supervisory positions and retired as Vice President for Steel Operations at Boardman Headquarters. Upon his retirement, he pursued interests in farming and travel and was active in church affairs.
He was a member of Castalia Trout Club, the Youngstown Country Club, former Director of First National Bank of East Chicago, former Battalion Commander of the local Navy Reserve, Elder of the Poland Presbyterian Church, former Poland Councilman and trustee of the Blackburn Home.
Mr. Stone is survived by three daughters, Barbara (Stuart) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Deborah (Nick) Mager of Poland, and Martha H. Stone of Towson, MD; six grandchildren, Margaret Wolfe, Sophia Paris, Owen Paris, Noah Bengur, Dinah Bengur, and Nicholas Bengur; and five great-grandchildren, Hannah, Mollie, Chloe, Luka and Nina.
Mr. Stone was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bunte, who died December 25, 2012; and his sister, Barbara Stone Chase.
Mr. Stone's family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the wonderful care provided by his caregivers, Barb, Nicki, Joan, Sheila, Karen, and the staff at Woodlands Assisted Living and Ohio Living Hospice.
Memorial services for Mr. Stone will be announced at a later date.
