Poland - John D. Sopko, 89 of Poland, OH, died Saturday, November 22, 2008 at his residence with his family at his side. Mr. Sopko was born Wednesday, September 17, 1919 in Youngstown, a son of Michael & Anna Estock Sopko, and was a lifelong are resident. He was a 1937 graudate of South High School, a WWII Army Veteran, where he was sationed in Africa, Italy, and Greece. He had recieved the Bronze Star, Asiatic-Pacifice Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Sopko had worked as a Purchasing Agent for Cold Metal Products, retiring in 1989 after 50 years. He was a member of the Faith Community Church and a 50 year member with the Wick Lodge F. & AM # 481 and was a 32nd degree Mason. He loved bowling, and golf and was on numerous leagues. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Florence Wietelmann, whom he married October 1, 1949 one daughter, Susan Sopko of Youngstown, and one son, J. Thomas Sopko of Medford, MA. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one infant son, Robert J. Sopko, one sister, Pauline Parks and two brothers, Herbert & David Sopko. Funeral services will be held at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 1:00 PM, where family and friends will be recieved Tuesday from 12:00 - 12:45 PM Contributions may be made in Mr. Sopko's name to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512.
