YOUNGSTOWN - John H. Sandy, 88, passed away on June 2, 2015, at his home in Youngstown, with his loving family at his side.
He was born on Aug. 19, 1926, in Youngstown, to Ralph and Margaret (Caizzo) Sandy. John grew up in Youngstown.
He graduated from Youngstown's East High School in 1944. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served on the Destroyer USS Wilkes in the Pacific during and after World War II.
He worked for The Brainard Rivet Company of Girard as an electroplater, where he retired in 1988.
John married Eleanor M. Sulick in 1956 in Angola, Ind. They were happily married for 59 years.
John was a member of Christ Our Savior at Saint Nicholas Church. He was an avid golfer, big boxing fan, talented artist, and enjoyed bocce, gardening and watching collegiate and professional sporting events. He always said that despite all of his years of playing the area's golf courses, he never got a hole-in-one.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Margaret Sandy; his brothers, Tony and Willie; his sister, Mary Sandy, all of Youngstown; and his niece, Mary Therese Neville of Mason.
John is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor; his daughters, Margaret Sandy of Youngstown, Jeanne (Thomas) Williams of Liberty and Susan Tropea of Campbell; his son, Robert (Bonnie) Sandy of Manassas, Va.; and sons John Sandy and Joseph (Sherry) Sandy also of Youngstown; his sister, Florence Colburn; his brother, Joseph (Patricia); seven amazing grandchildren, Vincent and Valerie Williams, Cecily Sandy, Joel and Anthony Sandy, and Paul and John Tropea; and his nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A visitation will be held at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St., Struthers, on Thursday, June 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Friday June 5, at 9:30 a.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Christ Our Savior at Saint Nicholas Church, 764 5th St , Struthers, OH 44471, on June 5, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. John's on Villa Marie Road, Lowellville.
