John Weed Powers, 93

YOUNGSTOWN - John Weed Powers, 93, passed away Nov. 22, at Park Vista Retirement Community.
He was born July 10, 1920, in Poland, the son of Franklin B. and Fannie Smith Powers.
John was a graduate of Poland Seminary High School and Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., where he earned the Phi Beta Kappa Award. Following service in the U.S. Army in World War II, he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School. For 54 years, he served as associate, partner, president and managing partner in the law firm of Manchester, Bennett, Powers and Ullman. Retiring in 1985, he then opened a private practice.
Dedicated to the Youngstown community, he was the founder of the Youngstown Area Arts Council and the Citizens League of Greater Youngstown. He was active in the Youngstown Revitalization Foundation, Rotary Club, Western Reserve Ballet, the Youngstown Symphony Society, the American Red Cross, the Poland Presbyterian Church and the Blackburn Home for the Aged. Early in his career, he served two terms as Mayor of Poland.
On Dec. 19, 1942, he married Emily M. Park, who survives him, in a Quaker ceremony at Abington Friends Meeting in Jenkintown, Pa.
John was a devoted and loving father of four children, David (Beverly) of Petaluma, Calif., Catherine of Youngstown, Jay (Kiernan) of Eugene, Ore. and Douglas (Abigail) of Ft. Wayne, Ind. He also leaves eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as a close extended family, including former daughter-in-law, Jane Zacharias Love and stepsister, Alice Buchanan Lane.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Franklin I. Powers (Jeri); his sister, Helen Powers; and his stepbrother, John R. Buchanan (Winni).
There are no services planned at this time. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. John's family requests that any gifts take the form of contributions to the Youngstown Symphony Society, 260 West Federal St., Youngstown, OH 44503 or the Poland Presbyterian Church, 2 Poland Manor, Poland OH 44514
Arrangements are being handled by the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland.
