John Raymond Perkins Sr., 86
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Trinity United Methodist Church for John R. Perkins, Sr., known as "Ray" to his family and friends. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Ray passed away peacefully on Friday, December 20, 2013. He was born in Struthers, Ohio on April 6, 1927, the son of Glenn and Evelyn (Fairbanks) Perkins. After graduating from Struthers High School in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17, serving in the Pacific during WWII. Upon his return to Ohio, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University and his Juris Doctor from Youngstown State University. In 1955, he and Marylee (Davis) were married, and together they made Boardman their home.
Ray worked for the Metropolitan Savings Bank for 37 years, where he served in many capacities, retiring in 1992 as its President and Chairman of the Board of Directors. While President, he successfully shepherded the Metropolitan through the Ohio Savings and Loan crisis in the mid-1980's, thus protecting the savings of many people in the Youngstown area. He also proudly served as a trustee of the Savings and Loan Assurance Corporation, which assisted many other financial institutions through that crisis.
In addition to Marylee, he is survived by his daughter, Nancy Perkins of Howland; his son, John (Catherine) Perkins Jr. of Westerville, Ohio; two grandsons, Jonathan Perkins and David Perkins; three sisters, Jeanette (Ervin) Powell of Jackson, Mississippi, Mary Lu Kirsty of New Russia, New York and Evelyn (Ronald) Oglesbee of Seal Beach, California; two brothers-in-law, Robert (Wanda) Davis of Boardman, and Al Davis of Diamond City, Arkansas; and a sister-in-law Marjorie (Robert) DeHoff of Gainesville, Florida; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Preceding him in death, besides his parents, are his brother, Robert G. Perkins, Sr., his brother-in-law, Bud Kirsty and his sister-in-law, Marcia Davis.
Friends may call 1 hour prior (10-11:00 a.m.) to the service at the church.
