Poland- John Robert Payne left this life for his heavenly home at 6:05 p.m. Tuesday evening, May 27th at his home. Sitting by his side was his faithful wife of 36 years, Lorecia "Lisa" Mashburn Payne. Their three loving daughters were present to support their parents.
All those that knew and loved John gathered at his and Lisa's home this Memorial Day weekend for what has come to be known as "Paynefest." This gathering is a celebration of bluegrass music, food, family, and friendship, the essence of what John was all about. John was unable to join in this time but his fellow bluegrass musicians played his beloved music all weekend long and John was able to visit with everyone one last time. A gift and memory that all who attended will cherish. This was all by John's request. He faced his last days, as he had all his days, with dignity and courage.
John loved to hunt, fish, play guitar, and he shared his love of these things with everyone he could.
John had served the Poland Local School District for 30 years as their sole bus mechanic, along with driving bus. All his "bus kids" loved the big bearded guy behind the wheel of their bus. When John was first diagnosed with cancer and was unable to drive anymore, his "bus kids" sent him a card they had made and signed. John was deeply touched by this card. Prior to working for the school district, he worked for 7 years on the Poland Road Department.
John leaves behind his wife, Lorecia "Lisa" Joan Mashburn Payne; three daughters, Alisa Phipps, Rebecca Payne, and Cassie (John) Miller; niece, Rana; and what he called his "babies," his eleven grandchildren, Brandi, Dominic, Shelby, Mariah, Logan, Samantha, Mia, John, Kaleb, Riley, and Elijah, who will all miss their beloved "Papa." And last, but not least, his black labs, Gus and Jake.
John has gone to his heavenly home to be reunited with his parents, Samuel and Florence Zarisky Payne and his only sibling, his brother, Randall Paul Payne.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Memorial Baptist Church, 56 Water St., Poland.
Calling hours will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland and Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church.
The family kindly suggests that any memorial gifts take the form of contributions in John's name to the Memorial Baptist Church Youth Camp Scholarship Fund, 56 Water St., Poland, Ohio 44514, in support of any young person wishing to attend church camp.
John always had a song in his heart and a tune on his flat top. Today and other todays, sing a song with a smile and think of him.
