John R. McGarry, 76 Youngstown- John R. McGarry, 76, of Country Club Lane died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Mr. McGarry was born August 30, 1926 in Youngstown, a son of the late William Henry and Nellie Mae Baker McGarry. He attended Campbell Memorial High School and was a lifelong area resident. A U.S. Naval Veteran of World War II, he served aboard the USS Massachusetts as a gunner in the Pacific Theater. He worked as a locomotive engineer for Youngstown Sheet & Tube, LTV Steel and the Mahoning Valley Railroad retiring in 1992 after 47 years of service. Mr. McGarry served as a union representative and past president of the United Steel Workers Union Local 2163. He was also an active member of the Campbell VFW Post 4723. After his retirement, Mr. McGarry was still active in the United Steel Workers Union working as the union hall manager. He enjoyed his dogs, collecting Lionel Trains, and taking walks. Along with his father, he was the engineer of locomotive #301 which is now retired and on display at the Canfield Fairgrounds. An avid bowler, he was a member of several bowling leagues. Besides his wife the former Helen Bayus whom he married July 27, 1949, he is survived by three daughters, Donna Jean and son-in-law Richard Depp, Sandy and son-in-law Pat Chrystal, Patty and son-in-law Ken Crago all of Canfield. A son, William Henry and daughter-in-law Joy Shimek of Canfield. Three sisters, Eileen Fiorini of Port Charlotte, Florida, Marilyn LaPaze of Boardman, Janet Wilcox of Durham, NC, two brothers William J. McGarry of Youngstown and Charles F. McGarry of Poland. Four grandchildren, Shawn (Mark Griffith) Chrystal of Liberty, Patrick (Cameron) Chrystal of Pawtucket, RI, Amanda Crago and Jeneane Crago both of Canfield. One great grandchild Keighan Griffith. A sister Donna Tofil precedes him in death. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM. Saturday at the Cunningham Becker Funeral Home, Poland. Friends may call Friday from 5:00 âa�" 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and again Saturday from 9:00 âa�" 9:45 AM prior to the service. So long Sheila.
