Lowellville- John T. Kamensky, Sr., 94, passed Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at the Hospice House in Poland. John was born on June 8, 1914 in Campbell, Ohio, the son of Martin and Mary (Sarvas) Kamensky. John has been a resident in the area his entire life. John served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in California and was discharged from Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1933. John was a farmer, and he also was employed by Sharon Steel and Youngstown Sheet and Tube Open Hearth. In 1972, as a mechanical repairman at the open hearth, John was awarded a "Pro Award" for his excellent job performance by designing and fabricating a new type of wrench that was used to reduce the time necessary to change hooks on ladle cranes. He also received several other commendations for his exceptional job performance. John and his family were founding members of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church in New Bedford, PA. He is presently a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville and was a former member of St. Charles in Boardman. John was a member of the Farm Bureau and the United Steelworkers of America Local 2163. After retiring in 1977, he became an excellent baker. His kolachi, cinnamon rolls, and donuts were absolutely delicious and special for his family. Gardening was John's passion. He always grew the biggest and the best flowers and all types of vegetables and melons to share with his family and friends. In 1987, he attempted to break a world record of the biggest tomato grown. He was featured in several articles in the Boardman Leader for his gardening expertise. His motto was everything in the garden grows with a little extra care. John married Rose Krivan on June 10, 1939. She passed on December, 26, 1976. He is survived by a daughter, Rosalie Olson; three sons, Martin (Jean) Kamensky, Michael (Marsha) Kamensky, and Kurt (Barbara) Kamensky; a sister, Irene Hrusovsky, all of Lowellville; 11 grandchildren, Richard A. (Kitty) Olson, Jacque (Brian) Filip, Angel (Bill) Laudermilt, Robert Olson, Joseph Kamensky, Matthew Kamensky, Kylene Kamensky, Janine (Kevin) Stinchcomb, Erin Kamensky, John V. Kamensky, and Candace Kamensky; and five great-grandchildren, Michael Olson, Kathy Olson, Bree Filip, Evan Filip, and Livia Laudermilt. John's second wife, Mary (Colucci) Kamensky, passed away in July of 1998. John also leaves behind step-children, Bob (Pam) Colucci, Mary Jo (Don) Thompson; step-grandchildren, Joseph, Robert, Nicole, and Michael; and several step-great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Martin and Joseph Kamensky; and three sisters, Mary Livosky, Margaret Klucher, and infant sister, Catherine. John's son, John T. Kamensky, Jr. passed away in 1994. A mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, July 5, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church with Rev. G. David Weikart officiating. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery. Friends will be received Thursday, July 3, 2008 from 6-8 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Lowellville Chapel, where a prayer service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. John's family wishes to thank the nurses and caregivers at Assumption Village for their compassion and friendliness, the St. Elizabeth Hospital nurses for their excellent care, and Hospice House for providing a beautiful serene atmosphere for John's passing.
