Boardman - John Sherman Hulburt, 90, of Boardman, died Wednesday morning at his residence surrounded by his family.
John, fondly known as Jack to his family, was born January 5, 1921 in Hubbard, a son of Frank and Jessie Stage Hulburt. He was raised in Hubbard and the eastside of Youngstown before moving to the southside. In 1992 he and Dorothy moved to Boardman.
John was a 1939 graduate of Scienceville High School and worked as a foreman and shipping clerk for General Fire Proofing Company where he retired in September of 1983 after 43 years of service.
During World War II, from 1942 until 1945, John served in the United States Coast Guard at Fort Hancock, New Jersey.
As a member of Christ Community Church in Campbell, he served as an usher and was also known as the gum and candy man.
John loved the Lord and his family with all his heart. He enjoyed tending to his home both inside and out and was known to be meticulous in all things. As the ultimate handyman, John helped his family, neighbors, and friends. He had the gift of sharing. At Christmas he would make his own chocolates and share them with everyone. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and a devoted husband for 66 years.
John leaves his wife, the former Dorothy L. Williams, whom he married September 14, 1944; two daughters, Karen (Ron) Coleman of Canfield and Nancy (Rich) Wardle of Poland; one brother, Robert (Kathy) Hulburt of Leetonia; two sisters, Doris (Charles) Hille of Prescott, Arizona and Audree (Larry) Wery of Struthers; two grandchildren, Barry (Rachel) Wardle and Sean (Michelle) Wardle all of Struthers; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Addison Wardle.
Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by two brothers, Irl and Rev. Warren Hulburt; and one sister, Vernell Turner.
