Lowellville - John E. "Yankee" Heban, Sr., 82, of Lowellville, died Friday, March 20, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Mr. Heban was born February 17, 1927 in Youngstown, a son of Joseph and Veronica Grummel Heban, Sr. A 1948 graduate of The Rayen School, Mr. Heban worked for Republic Steel in the printing department for 46 years, retiring in 1989. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving during World War II and he received the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon and the WWII Victory Ribbon. Mr. Heban was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville, where he was an usher. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 247 in Lowellville and the St. Anthony Society in Struthers. He enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns and the New York Yankees. He leaves his wife, the former Mary Piccirillo, whom he married September 1, 1951; three daughters, Doreen (Bill) Mills of Lowellville, Kathleen (Glenn) Kerr of North Canton, and Kristine (Michael) Carchedi of Poland; a son, John (Valerie) Heban Jr. of North Canton; two sisters, Katherine Shelby of Girard and Margaret (Warren) Wellendorf of Youngstown; eight grandchildren, Lauren (Damon) Gallucci, Dan (Ehrin) Heban, Cory Heban, Dennis Heban, Matthew Mills, Meagan Mills, Joshua Kerr, and Jenny Kerr; and one great-grandchild, Owen Gallucci. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew, Joseph Jr., and Stephan Heban; and three sisters, Mary D'Angelo, Vera McDermott, and Helen Santore. Services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Lowellville and 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church with Rev. G. David Weikart officiating. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Lowellville. Family and friends will be received Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Please visit
