Youngstown - John Howard Greiner, Sr., 82, died Friday evening, October 3, 2014 at his home, surrounded by family.
Mr. Greiner was born May 2, 1932 in Natrona Heights, PA, a son of John and Goldie Jones Greiner, and came to the Youngstown area as a young child.
His first job was with Royal Crown Cola as a truck driver. In 1961, he received his carpenter apprenticeship award and became a journeyman carpenter. Mr. Greiner was a member of the Ohio Carpenters Union Local 171, retiring in 1994 from the trade. In his free time, Mr. Greiner ran a saw sharpening business out of his home, serving many local companies over the years and did roofing for many people.
Mr. Greiner was a man of faith, always saying prayers for others in need. He was a former member of Highway Tabernacle Church, where he served as an usher. Many at church knew him as the "Candy Man" as he always had a pocket full of peppermints and butterscotch candies he handed out. He was also known for his quick wit and sense of humor, always having a one liner, telling a good joke, or a good story.
An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting with his beagle Patches, fishing, splitting firewood, and woodworking. He especially loved planting his annual vegetable garden at his home and enjoyed sharing his crop with family, friends, and neighbors.
His wife, the former Martha "Jean" Moylan, whom he married March 29, 1954, died August 25, 2014. He is survived by his two daughters, Pamela (John) Shargo of Boardman and Nancy (Rick) Witt of Austintown; one son, John (Lori) Greiner, Jr. of Youngstown; four grandchildren, Megan Shargo, Abigail (fiance Stephen Stiles) Patek, and Daniel and Jeremiah Greiner; and a sister, Joan Kline of Lower Burrell, PA, who adored her baby brother "Howard."
In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by his son, David A. Greiner; a granddaughter, Allyson Greiner; sister, Norma Jean Slonacher; brother, Gerald Greiner; and stepmother, Lenora Greiner.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St., Struthers, where family and friends will be received from 4:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Boardman.
The family would like to express their gratitude and love to his caregivers Mickey, Linda, Donna, and Dina. They would like to also thank Hospice of the Valley, especially Leslie, Jim, and Al for the excellent care they gave to Mr. Greiner and his family.
