Poland - John Getchey, 88, of Poland died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at Forum Health Northside Hospital surrounded by his family. John Getchey was born March 11, 1920 in Youngstown, a son of John and Helen Tomori Gecse. A 1939 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, John worked for Youngstown Sheet and Tube for 32 years. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving on the U.S.S Curtiss, which was hit by a kamikaze pilot, during World War II. John was a life long member of the Hungarian Presbyterian Church in Youngstown, where he served as a past Elder. He was also a member of the former St. Albans Lodge which is now merged with the Wick Lodge F & AM no. 481 and a 32nd degree Mason of the Valley of Youngstown Scottish Rite. He leaves his wife, the former Irene Lutheran, whom he married December 1, 1945; his daughter, Carol (Don Agler) Davis of Boardman; his son, John R. (Kathy) Getchey of Poland; two sisters, Julia Gott and Olga Diaz, both of Poland; a granddaughter, Megan (Mike) Daley of Poland; a grandson, John J. (Kristin) Getchey of Haskins, Ohio; two great-granddaughters, Lauren and Natalie Getchey; and a great-grandson, Michael Daley. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Irene Eppley; his brother, Frank Getchey; and his twin infant sister, Julia Getchey. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Hungarian Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in the Tod Homestead Cemetery. Friends will be received Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland and Saturday from 9:30-10:00 a.m. at the church.
