John âa�A"Sheriffâa�A� Stephen Gavran, 81 Struthers-John âa�A"Sheriffâa�A� Stephen Gavran, 81, of 4 W. Parkcliff died early Saturday morning at his residence. He was born on November 3, 1923, in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of Sophie and John Volk Gavran. He came to Struthers in 1925. Mr. Gavran was a brick layer for Union Local 8 for 35 years, before retiring in 1984. From 1942 until the end of World War II, Mr. Gavran served on the USCGC Ingham, one of the most decorated vessels in U.S. service, and at the end of World War II, served as flagship of the 7th fleet. Mr. Gavran was a member of the Saint Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers and itâa�a��s Altar and Rosary Society. He was a member of the Commercial Federation Union Lodge and was Past Commander of the Struthers VFW Post #3538. Mr. Gavran was renowned for his garden, growing every vegetable imaginable. He was especially proud of his fresh grown tomatoes and garlic and shared them generously with family and friends. He leaves his wife, the former, Helen B. Colick, whom he married April 11, 1970; three sisters, Anne Frances Zubyk of Girard, Margaret Steiner of Austintown, and Catherine Armstrong of Youngstown; and one brother, Stephen Gavran of Bergen County, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Gavran. Funeral services will be Tuesday 9:30AM at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers and 10:00AM at the Saint Nicholas Roman Catholic Church.
