John Demetra

Poland - John Demetra, 89, died Saturday evening, January 14, 2017 at Masternick Memorial Health Care Center.

John was born August 9, 1927 in Youngstown, a son of Stephen and Mary Halko Demetra.

Raised in Youngstown, he was a 1946 graduate of North (formerly Scienceville) High School. In 1946, he was drafted into the United States Army Air Corps and proudly served during World War II. After being honorably discharged in 1948, he returned to Youngstown, and began his career with General Fireproofing. He retired from the company with over 42 years of service.

In his free time, John enjoyed traveling with family and friends, planting an annual vegetable garden, woodworking with his brother-in-law Bob Haug, watching his wife bowl in her league, fishing, and loved polka music.

He was a member of the Poland Presbyterian Church and the Mahoning Valley Industrial Management Association.

John is survived by his high school sweetheart and best friend, the former June Rhiel, whom he married on August 2, 1952; three sons, John (Cathy) Demetra of Poland, James (Gloria) Demetra of Boardman, and Jerry (Nancy) Demetra of Boardman; brother, Michael (Dorothy) Demetra of Austintown; four grandchildren, Nathan and Jacob Demetra, Max Demetra, and Madison Demetra.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his infant son, John Joseph Demetra; two sisters, Anne Solomon and Mary Fecko; and his brother, Joey Demetra.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 9-10:45 a.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market Street, Boardman, where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mr. Demetra's name to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011
