John G "Jack" Cooper
Poland - John G Cooper, 75, entered into the Lord's Kingdom Thursday morning at Hampton Woods in Poland.
Mr. Cooper, also known as Jack, was born February 25, 1934 in Struthers, a son of James and Dorothy Stevens Cooper. He was raised in Struthers and moved to Poland in 1959.
A 1951 graduate of Struthers High School, Jack enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, serving from 1952 until 1956 on the U.S.S. Frybarger.
Returning from the war, Jack was a truck driver for his father's business. He later worked for McNicholas Transfer and retired in 1994 from Tri-County Distributing after 30 years of service. Upon retirement, he received an accommodation from the Ohio Governor for driving over 4 million miles without an accident.
After retirement, Jack enjoyed spending time both working and fishing at several local lakes. Jack served and was very active in the Korean War Vets Post # 137, the American Legion Post #15, and the Youngstown VFW Post #93.
The utmost importance and Jack's greatest pride in life was his family. Always ready with a big smile and a joke, Jack left a lasting impression with everyone, touching the lives of many people. Once you met him, you were a friend for life. In the 1960's, he was instrumental in starting the "Players League" with Poland Baseball, and the "Poland Touchdown Club" in the 1970's.
He was an ordained deacon of the Poland Presbyterian Church and presently a member of the Struthers Presbyterian Church.
Besides his wife the former Dorothy Jacobson whom he married October 9, 1954, he leaves two sons, John G (Suzanne) Cooper Jr. and Daniel (Colleen) Cooper all of Poland; two daughters, Terri Cooper Luzik and Dawna Cooper Molter also of Poland; and eleven grandchildren, Ben, Cody, Jessie, Abbey, Clay, Jennie (Tommy), Sarah, Matt, Betsy, Tom, and Hannah; and one great-grandson, Jhordin.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Cooper, and a sister who passed away soon after birth.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 1:30 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers, with Rev. Dick Ferris officiating. Interment will follow at the Lake Park Cemetery.
Friends will be received Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
