John Harry "Swede" Anderson, 93
John Harry Anderson died peacefully on November 26, 2014, after a brief stay at the Hospice of the Valley. John was born August 10, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois, to Harry Albert Anderson and Mary Alta Williams Anderson. Harry A. Anderson served in the U.S. Army and Mary Alta Anderson served in the U.S. Marine Corps in WWI. The family moved to Youngstown when John was 3. He graduated from South High School in 1939 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Jan. 2, 1942. John was a "Gunny" Sergeant, 1st Marine Division, sent to the Pacific Theater where he fought bravely at Guadalcanal. Upon his return to the U.S. he completed an electrical engineering degree at Youngstown College and was hired by The Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company.
On August 21, 1954 he married Melba Jane Fitch and they built a house in Poland. "Swede" worked as General Foreman of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Electric Shop from 1959 until the mills closed.
Then he was hired by Casey Equipment Corp. to bring back many of his laid-off electricians to refurbish the steel mill motors. He continued working for Casey selling equipment and retired at age 72. He and his wife rollerskated as teenagers and he continued to do so through middle age. John was an avid golfer, playing in leagues and with friends for many years. Up until the last few years he swam regularly at the Davis YMCA. He was preceded in death by his wife Melba Jane Fitch who died Sept. 24, 1999. He is survived by his daughter Lynn Anderson, of Youngstown, daughter Jill (John Beard) Damiano of Poland, and his son Dennis Lee (Heather) Anderson of Poland; grandson Michael Anthony Damiano, Jr. and granddaughter Rachelle Marie Damiano.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 AM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland. Friends will be received Tuesday from 4-7PM at the funeral home.
