Austintown - John A. "Tony" Amadio, 92, of Austintown, died Saturday, July 5, 2008 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown. Mr. Amadio was born February 9, 1916 in Youngstown, a son of Cesare and Lena Elisio Amadio. He was a 1933 graduate of Struthers High School. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army serving in World War II and was honorably discharged. In 1948, Mr. Amadio was called back to serve in the U.S. Army as an Ordnance Officer, where he traveled to Japan, Europe, the Philippines and Turkey. He received the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1966 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Amadio was a member of the American Legion and the Retired Officers Association. After retirement, Mr. Amadio went to work for Marion Power Shovel, where has was a material logistic officer and traveled to Pakistan and helped build the Tarbela Dam. Mr. Amadio enjoyed golfing and was an avid fisherman. He kept a fishing pole in the back of his car and when he passed a stream he was known to stop and go fishing. His wife, the former Rachel L. Stewart, whom he married May 16, 1939, died December 30, 2006. He is survived by his son, Paul (Rae) Amadio of Cary, NC; two brothers, Paul Amadio of Cuyahoga Falls and Thomas (Sally) Amadio of Stow; one sister, Georgia (Bill) Norling of New Middletown; two grandchildren, Anthony (Jin-Chou) Amadio of Mauldin, SC and Brandi (Scott) Nolish of Columbus; three step-grandchildren, Angel (Mike) Reale of Oldsmar, FL, Capt. Lewis (Amy) Sorvillo of San Angelo, TX, and Michelle Sorvillo of Las Vegas, NV. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Gemma Wunsch, Juanita Amadio, Helen Pichitino, Anita Amadio and Daisy Darvis. Friends will be received Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
