Struthers- Johanna R. Schilling, 87, formerly of Manor Ave., died Sunday afternoon, September 6, 2009 at Maplecrest Nursing Home in Struthers where she was a resident for six years.
Johanna was born July 3, 1922 in Lowellville, a daughter of Michael and Anna (Kossick) Churan.
Johanna graduated from Poland Seminary High School in 1940. She was a former member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers and its Altar and Rosary Society, and a Den Mother for Cub Scout Troop 101.
She enjoyed baking, especially homemade fruit pies, working in the vegetable garden, and fishing along with her husband. Together they belonged to the Thunderbird Archery Club. She enjoyed traveling throughout the eastern United States and volunteering at area nursing homes to help make cancer pads for terminally ill patients. Johanna was devoted to her family and shared her appreciation of nature with them, especially through her love of the many birds who visited their backyard feeders.
Her husband, William H. Schilling, whom she married in 1941, died October 23, 2007.
She leaves three children, Billie (Ronald) Sicafuse of Poland, Patricia (Daniel) Canter of Hartford, and William Richard Schilling of Poland; a son-in-law, Ronald DeSalvo of Boardman; five grandchildren, Mark Sicafuse of Poland, Sharon Sicafuse of Chester, Conn., Christine (Scott) DeSalvo Miller of Cleveland, Michele Canter of Nashville, Tenn., and Darrell Canter of Vienna; and three great-grandchildren, Daniel, Dillon, and Gabriel Canter.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra DeSalvo; and five siblings, Michael and Mary Churan, Anna Rester, Dorothy Wilkos, and Helen Susany.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Columba Cathedral. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Lowellville.
Family and friends will be received Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and Thursday from 8:45 a.m. until the time of the prayer service at 9:15 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.
