Joanne Reardon Barret

August 10, 1928 — March 19, 2014

New Middletown-Alice Joanne Reardon Barret, 85, of New Middletown, passed away on March 19, 2014 at Hospice House in Poland, surrounded by family, old photos and cardinals.

She was born in Youngstown, Ohio on August 10, 1928 and graduated from Chaney High School in 1945.

Joanne was married 51 years to Youngstown "Corner Boy" Sheldon Ercell Barret who preceded her in death May 2, 2003. They met while on a double date - each on the date with another person; a meeting more serendipitous than scandalous.

Joanne leaves behind her legacy in six kids, Debi (Mike) Karash of Canfield, Kevin (Nancy) Barret of New Middletown, Lance (Amy) Barret of Farmington, CT, Mark (Tammy) Barret of New Middletown, Kurt (Christie Brinkley) Barret of University Heights, OH and Alison (George Clooney) Barret of Columbus; eleven grandchildren Drew Barret, Jodie (Jay) Brimmer, Chris (Melissa) Ilovsky, Dave (Dawn) Karash, Steve (Dawnyel) Karash, Megan (Kevin) Bailey, Kelly Barret, Eric Barret, and Morgan, Haley and Darrell Claypoole; six great-grandchildren, Hope, Dillan, Garrett, Hailey, Evan and Nevets; beloved sister-in-law and best friend, Elaine McClain and adored brother-in-law, Eugene "Duke" Barret; thirteen nieces and nephews who kept her connected to many parts of the country, to Barret traditions and to unparalleled love; and special friends she thought of as her own family Jan, Mach and Vaughn Machel, and Tom, Pam, Tori and Ryan Salata.

Besides her husband, Joanne was preceded in death by her mother, Alice "Dolly" Reardon, brothers-in-law, Duane Barret, George McClain and Tom Cross; sisters-in-law, Anne Barret, Janice Barret Cross and DeLoris "Dodo" Barret; and nephew, Scott McClain. She was an only child with many brothers and sisters.

Joanne was a proud member of the Springfield Local High School Athletic Boosters throughout the 70s and early 80s, working alongside partners-in-crime, Dianne Borzick, Rosalie Shane, Nan McCambridge, Nancy Seese and others as they catered community events amidst much laughter.

Joanne found great comfort and purpose at Old Springfield United Church of Christ. This" little country church", as she liked to call it, was a powerful and stabilizing force in her life. She also relished her time living at Woodlands assisted living facility, serving as the president of the resident council, dancing with Lynn and Candy, regaling her neighbors with funny stories, and attending every activity even if her limited sight impeded her ability to participate.

Joanne was known for her quick wit and sometimes bawdy sense of humor, her gift of gab, her empathy and her incredible resilience. She and her husband absolutely reveled in hosting hundreds of guests through the years at their Pennsylvania camp. Their generosity helped create many bonfire memories, special friendships and traditions.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, May 22, 2014 from 4-8 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland. A memorial service celebrating Joanne's life will be held Friday, May 23, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Old Springfield United Church of Christ.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Springfield Township Council of Churches and Community (STCCC), PO Box 434 New Middletown, OH 44442, benefitting neighbors in need, or the Tommy Detesco Fund for Brain Tumor Research, 7341 Eisenhower Drive , Boardman, OH 44512, in honor of Dr. Thomas Detesco's years of attentive care for their parents.
