Boardman - Jessie June Matteson, 102, died February 7, 2014 at the Greenbriar Healthcare Center.
Mrs. Matteson was born September 16, 1911 in Laramie, Wyoming, a daughter of Fred and Catherine Thompson Schenck, and came to the Youngstown area with her family as a child.
She was a 1929 graduate of South High. Mrs. Matteson first worked for Woolworth's, then Semple Real Estate as a secretary, and retired in 1976 from Atlas Marking Products as a secretary.
She was a member of the Boardman United Methodist Church and the Fernleaf Rebekah Lodge in Canfield, where she served as a past Noble Grand. Her interests included traveling, quilt making, crocheting afghans, making doll clothes, and dancing. Jessie's secret to her longevity was enjoying a beer a day along with gingersnap cookies and always displaying a sense of humor.
Mrs. Matteson is survived by her son, Kenneth (Marge) Matteson of Boardman; four grandchildren, Darlene (Gary) Fay of Palm Bay, FL, Charlene Bass of Plainfield, IL, Kimberly (Tom) Caputo of Boardman, and Sharon (Nick) Jordan of Boardman; 8 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by seven sisters, Mabel Sheller, Mae Schenck, Doris Irwin, Irma Davis, Viola Schenck, Eileen Colarich, and Shirley Williams; and one brother, Fred Schenck.
Family and friends will be received Friday from 4-5:15 p.m. at the new Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market Street, followed by a funeral service at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Lake Park Cemetery.

The family wishes to express their appreciation and thank the staff of Greenbriar Healthcare Center for all the love and support they gave Jessie especially the wonderful nurses, management, the activities director and staff, the chef, housekeeping, and the aides, who all have become like a second family to her. They would also like to thank All Caring Hospice for the comfort they gave to Jessie in her final days.
