Poland - Jeffrey L. Sontag, 65, formerly of Struthers, died Wednesday afternoon, January 6, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center after a short battle with cancer.
Jeffrey, known as "Jeff" was born December 30, 1950 in Youngstown, a son of Vincent and Mildred Bennett Sontag.
Raised in Poland, he attended Poland Seminary High School. He was drafted into the United States Army, serving for two years in Korea during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged, he moved to Clearwater, FL for several years until moving back to Struthers in 1974 and later to Poland in 1999.
Mr. Sontag worked as a roller helper for Cold Metal Products in Campbell for 26 years, retiring in 2002, upon the company's closing. After retirement, he worked for Jim's VW Customs in Columbiana for several years doing mechanical work.
In his free time, Jeff enjoyed riding his Goldwing motorcycle and was a member of the Goldwing Road Rider's Association, Youngstown Chapter. He also enjoyed working on cars over the years and enjoyed going to breakfast on Sundays and going for wings on Wednesdays with his longtime friends. An outdoorsman, he loved being outside and keeping a well manicured and landscaped yard.
Jeff loved being "Papa" to his ten grandchildren, spending all the family time he could with them and attending their events.
Jeff is survived by three sons, Jason Sontag of Poland, Justin (Jodie) Sontag of Cuyahoga Falls, Jeffrey (Andrea) Sontag II of Brownlee Woods; a daughter, Jennifer Sontag of Lowellville; three sisters, Jean Ann Wayne of Bowie, MD, Debbi Amendola of Boardman, and Peggy (David) Lee of Warsaw, IN; and ten grandchildren, Vincent and Dominic, Kira, Katelynn, Danika, Delaney, and Mason, and Kaley, Aidan, and Bella.
In addition to his parents, Jeff was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Sharak, and his former wife, Janice Sontag.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park at a later date.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday from 3-5:45 p.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service.
