Jeanne Johnson Lind, 84 Jeanne Johnson Lind, 84, died Tuesday, August 13 at Beeghly Medical Center. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on July 6, 1918 to Ashton Powell and Corrine Rice Johnson. Jeanne was valedictorian of her class at Miss Hutchisonâa�a��s School for Girls, Memphis and is an alumnus of Southwestern University (now Rhodes College), Memphis, where she received honors in French. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She met Albert E. Lind, Sr., on the athletic field at Southwestern, where she ran track, and he coached football. They were married at Idlewild Presbyterian Church, Memphis, June 24, 1939. Jeanne had been offered a full scholarship to Vassar, but chose marriage and motherhood, living a life dedicated to her family and friends. During World War II, while her husband served in the U.S. Navy and participated as an LSM Group Commodore at the Invasion of Iwo Jima, Jeanne served as a Red Cross Volunteer. She lived in Memphis, Florida, Chicago, New York and Washington D.C. before moving to Youngstown in 1958. She was a member of the Ladies Guild of the Youngstown Hospital Association, where she volunteered. She also was a member of the Youngstown Bridge Club, Friends of American Art, Youngstown Country Club and the Youngstown Club. She and her husband were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown. Jeanne was an avid tennis player, had an appreciation for music, a talent for dance and enjoyed literature. She was well traveled, having toured Asia, Europe and Central America. Jeanne was admired for her delicate beauty, âa�A"Southernâa�A� Charm, sense of humor and easy laugh, love of language, and her ability to elevate the ordinary to the extraordinary. She is survived by her husband Al Sr. of Poland, her son, Albert Jr. of Poland and his wife Cathy; her daughter, Jennifer of Springfield, Virginia and her husband Gary Hopkins; and a first cousin Mary Cooper of Memphis, Tennessee. Calling hours will be Friday from 5 p.m.to 8 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland. There will be a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Fennell of the Poland Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be at Poland Riverside Cemetery. Memorial may be made to the Butler Institute of American Art or Rhodes College in Memphis.
