Poland- Jean E. Spencer, 92, of Poland, died Saturday, March 13, 2010 after a two-year illness.
Mrs. Spencer was born June 23, 1917 in Youngstown, a daughter of Floyd and Leona Lewis Barnhart.
She was a graduate of South High School. Prior to her marriage, she worked at a Drug Store in Youngstown, then later for the Poland Schools for several years as a study monitor, and retired from Kaufmann's Department Store after 10 years of service.
She was a member of the Poland Presbyterian Church and enjoyed collecting antiques. She was also a Gold Star Mother and participated in the Poland Parades with the group for over 40 years.
Her husband, Charles Spencer, whom she married December 16, 1939, died February 27, 1972. She leaves her daughter, Patricia (Thomas) Spencer-Kleinknecht of New Middletown; her sister, Carrie Parker of Cincinnati; five step-grandchildren, who loved her and thought of her as their own grandmother, Marisha, Marianne, Thomas, Richard, and William; special friends, Bill and Marge Kennedy of Canfield and their family; and all her wonderful neighbors that helped her throughout the years.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, James H. Spencer, who was killed in Vietnam on July 14, 1967; and her brother, David Barnhart.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland. Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
