Poland - Jean A. (Hollingbery) McGowan, 87, a life-long resident of Poland, died after a short illness at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Born in March, 1923 Mrs. McGowan was a daughter of Rodney and Ophelia Olson Hollingbery.
During her many years as a school secretary in the Poland School System, Mrs. McGowan particularly enjoyed helping students of all ages and, after her retirement, volunteered in the High School Library. She was a member of the Poland United Methodist Church for many years and a supporting patron of the Poland Public Library.
Mrs. McGowan filled her busy retirement years traveling; extensively enjoying the many benefits of the Poland Library and the YMCA; exploring the trails of Poland Forest; enjoying the home she and her husband built; and delighting in the company and activities of her much loved children, grand-children and great-grand-children.
Mrs. McGowan was preceded in death by her infant son; her husband, Jack G. McGowan, who died in 1964; her in-laws, Edward (Betty) and William McGowan; her sister, Janet Hinson; her brother, Rodney Hollingbery, and his wife, Elva, with whom she was extremely close.
Joined together in grief for her death and celebration of her life are Mrs. McGowan's brother, Theodore (Minnie) Hollingbery; her children, John (Eileen) McGowan, Susan (James) Hutchinson, Timothy (Marian) McGowan, and Lisa (Robert) Harris; grandchildren, John McGowan, Laurie (Don) Dedo, Jeff (Janet) Hutchinson, Andy Hutchinson, Michael (Tracy) Hutchinson, Jennifer (Philip Lott) McGowan, Kevin McGowan, Megan McGowan, and Amanda Harris; great-grandchildren, John and Joey McGowan, Payton Dedo, and Haley, Alyssa, Nathan, Adam, Cameron, and Rachel Hutchinson; along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A private interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, with a memorial service to be held at a later date.
