Poland - Jean E. Hoop, 96, of Struthers, died Saturday afternoon, October 3, 2020 at Wickshire Nursing Home, Poland. Much heartfelt appreciation needs to be expressed to the kind, compassionate, nurses and staff of Sunrise Homes and Crossroads Hospice!

Jean was born April 15, 1924 in Youngstown, a daughter of Alfred and Emma Mohr Gough.

Raised in Struthers, Jean was a 1942 graduate of Struthers High School (National Honor Society) and obtained Business certificates while in Michigan. On January 15, 1944, she married William H. Hoop, and they shared 68 years of marriage until his passing on February 25, 2012. In 1948, Bill's job with Westinghouse Electric relocated them to Irwin, PA, where they made their home until returning to their hometown of Struthers in 1981. Jean worked as a bookkeeper and Office Manager for Smeltz Oil Distributor in Irwin and in the credit offices of Sears in Greensburg, PA.

While in Irwin, PA, Jean and Bill were active members of the Irwin Presbyterian Church and were the Youth Fellowship Leaders for many very effective years.  Jean was currently a member of the Struthers Parkside Church, formerly known as Struthers Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and belonged to it's Women's Association and Giorias Sunday School Class. Jean was generous with her time and volunteered to provide weekly lunches for the Struthers Rotarians who met in the fellowship hall of her church. Also, she served the community as a meals-on-wheels coordinator.  Jean was a wonderful friend and neighbor and while raising her boys was active and shared her time and ability with school activities, PTA, Garden Clubs, Scouting (Den Mother) and was always more than willing to lend a serene, competent hand to anyone in need.

Some of Jean's favorite pastimes included wintering in Naples, Florida with her husband after their retirement, gardening, needlework, golfing and bowling.  Jean and Bill were able to travel extensively throughout the United States and Canada and the United Kingdom.

Jean is survived by her sons, William G. (Elaine) Hoop of Tavares, FL and David A. Hoop of Tidioute, PA; five grandchildren, Lindsey (Peter) Tincher of Gainesville, FL, Melanie (Douglas) Brede of Charlottesville, VA, Sarah (Chris Maffeo) Hoop of New Paltz, NY, Gavin (Lyndsay) Hoop of Mohegan Lake, NY and Jonathan Mayo (Jackie) of Queens, NY; four great-grandchildren, Lavinia, Sylvan,  Declan and Brienne. Also, lifelong friend and cousin (who introduced Jean and Bill as teenagers) Jane Fithian nee Hoop (Jack) of Boardman, Ohio.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by her brothers, Howard and Randall Gough and daughter-in-law, Johnette Sullivan-Hoop.

Memorial services will be held at a later date and when appropriate.  Interment is at Poland Riverside Cemetery.

The family request that material tributes take the form of contributions to the Alzheimer's Association Greater Eastern Ohio Area Chapter, 3711 Starr Center Drive, Suite 4, Canfield, Ohio 44406 in memory of Jean.
