CANFIELD - Jay L. Rogers, (affectionately known as Papa Jay) passed away peacefully at Hospice of the Valley in Boardman, on Thursday afternoon Nov. 24, 2011, at the age of 95.
He was born on Sept. 16, 1916, in Barnesboro, Pa., a son of Albert E. and Gertrude Hibbard Rogers and resided in the Youngstown area most of his life.
He attended South High School before joining the U.S. Navy. He served as a Carpenter's Mate First Class from 1942 to 1945 before being honorably discharged. He was a life member of York Drexel VFW Post 5532 of Washingtonville.
Jay was a proud member of Carpenters Local No. 171 for over 60 years, working as a carpenter, millwright and pile driver. He loved keeping busy and worked until he was 92.
Jay was an active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. There he was known as "The Candy Man," as he loved to hand out "Smarties" to everyone.
He will be sadly missed by his sweetheart and wife of 49 years, Edith (Freebairn); stepsons Zane (Susan) and Robert (Teresa) Good; stepdaughter Jeanne Yankle; grandsons Don (Shelly) Jakovina), Josh Good, Robert Good, Andrew Good; granddaughters Amanda (Dave) Clementi and Stefanie Good; great-grandchildren Donnie, Casey and Jay Jakovina; and numerous nieces and nephews from the Youngstown area and Portland, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Ronald; brothers Edward and Richard; and sisters Geraldine, Emily and Betty.
Family and friends may call from 10:15 until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Boardman prior to the memorial service at 11 a.m.
The family requests that material tributes be sent to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512.
