Poland - Jason "Jay" Christopher White, 37, passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at University Hospitals Case Medical Center while awaiting a liver transplant.

Jason, affectionately known as "Jay" was born June 18, 1975, in Youngstown, a son of James and Betsey (Beal) White.

He was a 1993 graduate of Poland Seminary High School and was a member of the symphonic and jazz band, playing the trombone and soccer for the Bulldogs. Jay went on to receive his bachelor's degree in biology and his master's degree in molecular biology from Youngstown State University. While at YSU, Jay was a graduate assistant and had the experience of going to the Arctic Circle to study plant life. While going to school, Jay worked as a server at Applebee's in Boardman and Niles. He was currently a junior at Med Central College in Mansfield majoring in nursing.

After graduation, he moved to Wadsworth and then to Ashland, Ohio to work as a scientist. He was employed by WIL Research. In May of 2012, he moved back to Poland.

Jay was an Eagle Scout and a member of Holy Family Parish in Poland, serving as an altar boy through high school.

With a passion for music, Jay was a fretless bass guitarist and trombone player for the Olympus Mons Band, playing in various clubs in the Youngstown area. One of his favorite past times was singing karaoke to Frank Sinatra songs.

He also enjoyed fishing, watching soccer and hockey, the Colorado Avalanche in particular, playing video games, anything Star Wars, and a love for animals, rescuing many of them. Jay was also very proud of his Welsh heritage, having tattoos of the words "patience" and "courage", and displaying the Welsh flag at his apartment. He was also learning the language.

In addition to his parents of Poland, he is survived by two brothers, Geoffrey (Melissa) White of Milford, VA, and Joshua (Bobbi Hall) White of Poland; nephew, Owen Christopher White; niece, Annabella White; aunts and uncles, Rick and Connie Beal of Bainbridge, Chuck and Donna Beal of Struthers, Walt and Cheryl White of Girard, Charlie and Sandy Powell of Mineral Ridge, and Janet White of Girard; numerous cousins and many friends; and his two beloved cats, Charlie and Sammie.

Jay was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Edward and Betty Beal; paternal grandparents, Walter and Ethel White; and his cat, Oscar.

A prayer service will be held Friday at 9:15 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Family Parish at 10 a.m.

Family and friends will be received Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Jay's name to Angels for Animals, 4750 W. South Range Road, Canfield, OH 44406, in honor of his love for animals.
