Janet Joy Hamaker, 86, passed away on Monday afternoon, August 5, 2024, at Mercy Health-St Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
Janet was born on May 15, 1938, in Youngstown, Ohio, to William and Sally Harris Patterson. Raised in Youngstown, she was a proud graduate of South High School, Class of 1955. A woman of dedication and commitment, Janet devoted over 18 years to working in loss prevention for Murphy Mart Stores and later Ames Department Store. She also spent 40 years serving diligently on the Mahoning County Election Board.
On November 17, 1956, Janet married the love of her life, Richard C. "Dick" Hamaker. Together, they shared a beautiful life in Youngstown, creating cherished memories. They enjoyed traveling to the East Coast, particularly Washington D.C., during Dick's service in the Army Reserves. They also bonded over their shared passion for amateur radio operation, Janet's handle being KC8PUO, and motorcycle riding. Janet found joy in bowling with her daughter in the Suberbnites Ladies League at the former Wedgewood lanes. She was a talented seamstress, craftworker, and an avid reader of mystery novels. She took pride in her yard work, from gardening to mowing the lawn.
Above all, Janet treasured her family. They were the heart of her world, and she found immense happiness in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Known affectionately as the "Baby Whisperer," Janet had a special gift for soothing even the fussiest of infants.
Janet is survived by her beloved husband of over 67 years, Dick; her daughter, Judy Wertz of Youngstown; her son, Wally (Nann) Hamaker of Las Vegas, Nevada; her daughter-in-law, Amy Jo Anderson of Austintown; her sister, Shirley (Tom) Eckley of Hubbard; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard B. Hamaker.
In this time of remembrance, there will be no services held for Janet. However, contributions in her memory may be made to the Mahoning Valley Animal Charities.
Janet Joy Hamaker will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her and her memory will be a source of comfort and inspiration to those she has left behind.
