Columbiana - James "Poppie" Watson, 87, formerly of Poland, died September 21, 2017 in Inpatient Salem Community Hospital. Mr. Watson was born May 22, 1930 in Youngstown, a son of James "Doc" and Sophie Theil Watson.
He was a 1948 graduate of Poland Seminary High School and attended the Coast Guard Academy and Bucknell University. Poppie worked in the Engineering field for Standard Slag in Youngstown for over 30 years. Playing Polo was his passion, where he was in several clubs including the Beaver Valley Polo Club. Another one of his favorite pastimes was sailing on his boat.
He is survived by his wife, the former, Doris Ludt, who he married June 15, 1953; two daughters, Kathleen Moran of Beloit and Wendy Ritchie of Salem; one son, James T. Watson of Plant City, FL; six grandchildren, Jason Candle, Jesse Ritchie, Meghan Ritchie, Nick Moran, Amanda Watson, and Allison Watson; two great-grandchildren, Lachlan Ritchie and Avery Candle; one sister, Nancy (Robert) Lajoice of Jackson, WI; and one brother, Joseph (Mary) Watson of San Jose, CA.
He was preceded in death by both his parents.
Services will be held at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home Poland, Wednesday at 12:00 PM.
Friends and family will be received Wednesday from 10:00 AM to 11:45 AM at the funeral home
