Poland- James Pappas, died at home, on Sunday, April 12, 2015, surrounded by loved ones. A memorial service will be held at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday April 18, 2015 at 12:00PM, with visitation starting at 11:00AM at the church.
Jim was born on May 5, 1925 to Cora Bella and Harry Pappas of Ambridge, PA. He enlisted in the United States Navy on June 22, 1943 and was sent to Holy Cross College in Massachusetts for pre-med training. Following 64 weeks, the Navy's need changed and his class was sent to Notre Dame University for officer's training.
He served on the oil tanker, USS Raccoon until his release from active duty on June 25, 1946. As a naval reservist, he earned a B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Pittsburgh and was employed in the Youngstown area for 46 years as a pharmacist for Gray Drug then Rite Aid.
Jim is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Kline Pappas and their three daughters, Cheryl Kear of Poland, Karen Dillon of Lisbon and Leslie Conzett of Boardman. He will be dearly missed by his six grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Schofield and Cora Pappas; and his older brother, Christ Pappas. He met his first great grandson, who was born on November 13, 2015 and was so looking forward to the birth of his second great grandson and his first great granddaughter in early summer.
He was preceded in death by his older sisters, Mary Luketic and Annetta Pappas and his younger brother, Harry Pappas.
Jim enjoyed photography and traveling with family and friends on day trips or extended vacations throughout the world. He loved the outdoors and spent much time working in his yard. He was a Gideon for 23 years, distributing bibles locally and contributing to worldwide distributions.
