James âa�A"Yodoâa�A� Novotny, 80 Poland- James Novotny, 80 died Monday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. The son of Czechoslovakian immigrants, John and Katherine Skokan Novotny, Jim, who was affectionately nicknamed Yodo, was born April 8, 1925 on the Northside of Struthers where he was one of twelve children. Jim attended Struthers High School and at the age of 17 enlisted in the United States Navy. Serving as a coxswain in World War II on the Destroyer Escort MAURICE J. MANUEL in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters, Jim was proud to have been in Tokyo Bay for Japanâa�a��s peace signing ending the war. Returning from the War, Jim married his sweetheart Pearl and began his employment at the P&LE Railroad where he retired as inspector in 1986 after 39 years of service. Jim was also an independent mason by trade. A long time member of the Infant Jesus of Prague Church in Boardman, Jim was a member of the GCU Lodge #442, Byzantine Pairs Club, and the Northsiderâa�a��s in Struthers. An avid sportsman, he loved his baseball, football and fishing and also loved his cup of coffee. He was a prince of a man to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Jim and his wife, the former Pearl Malley, would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this October 26, 2006. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by two children, Claudia and husband David DiRienzo of Canfield and David Novotny of Dublin, Ohio; five sisters, Dorothy Novotny of Youngstown, Helen Boccio and Mary Mehley both of Struthers, Elizabeth Ross of Hillsville and Irene Kollar of Boardman; one brother, Michael Novotny of Struthers; four grandchildren, Stacey (Todd) Downing, Kevin (Karen) DeGenaro, Taylor Novotny; Amber (Jason) Nolty; Michelle DiRienzo of Columbus; Michael DiRienzo of Avon Lakes OH; and five great-grandchildren, Greer, Quinn, Reese, Zachary and Booston. Besides his parents Jim was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Novotny, Margaret Hudock and Ann Susman and two brothers, John and Joseph Novotny. Funeral services will be Friday, 9:15 am at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland and 10:00 AM at Infant Jesus of Prague in Boardman.
