James D. Mamounis

Struthers - James D. Mamounis, Sr., 64, died Monday afternoon, March 19, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Health Center after a six month battle with cancer.

James, known by many as "Jim" and "The Greek" was born on August 20, 1953 in Youngstown, a son of the late Gust and Marie (Crocker) Mamounis.

A lifelong area resident, Jim was a 1971 graduate of East High School. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving until his honorable in 1974 with the rank of PV2.

Upon returning home from his military service, he began working for P&LE Railroad and then for the Laborer's International Union Local 125, mainly working in asbestos abatement for the Union. Jim later took a position with Youngstown United Music as a collector and most recently was working for Astro Shapes in Struthers. He was also a member of the United Steelworkers Union Local 9401.

Since 1993, Jim was a member of the Church of Christ of Struthers. In his free time, he enjoyed bowling on Monday nights in a league at the Holiday Bowl in Struthers and was a diehard Cleveland Cavaliers, Browns, and Indians fan.

He is survived by his wife, the former Terrie Benson, whom he married December 30, 1993; three sons, James (fiancee Bonnie Cuculich) Mamounis, Jr. of Poland, Joseph Mamounis of Campbell, and Michael (fiancee Mysti Bottrel) Benson of Pittsburgh; two daughters, Danielle (fiance Matthew Clark) Mamounis of Boardman and Nanette Mamounis of Struthers; two foster sons, Ronald (fiancee Britany Chakos) Miller of Boardman and Matthew (Jamie Hickey) Miller of Struthers; three grandchildren, Jordan Miller and Damien and Ezekiel James Miller; and five siblings, Marguerite (Paul) Gillern of Berlin Center, Shalimar Jones of Dallas, John (Sherri) Mamounis of Boardman, and William (Debbie Bultako) Mamounis of Youngstown.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Dean Mamounis.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m at the Church of Christ, 5775 Poland-Struthers Rd. (Rte. 616), where family and friends will be received one prior to the service.
