James R. Lendon

Canfield - James R. Lendon, 80, died March 18, 2016 Brookdale Austintown.

Mr. Lendon was born July 19, 1935 on the family farm in Belmont County, OH, a son of Wilbur and Mary Urwin Lendon.

He was a 1953 graduate of Flushing High School. Jim went on to Hiram College receiving his BA in 1959 and later Colby College, where he received his MTS in 1966. Jim started his teaching career in Newton Falls teaching Health and Science from 1958-1963, where he also was an assistant coach in football and track. He then taught in Boardman Schools from 1963-1998. Jim taught Biology I and II and was Chairman of Science Department. During his tenure there he was head wrestling coach and was faculty representative for soccer. He wrote the following quote in his letter of resignation:

"I leave, knowing many students benefited from my presence and that I benefited, equally from my experience of teaching a few thousand young people." 2/2/1998.

Jim had a great love of the outdoors. With his family, he camped throughout the U.S. He always enjoyed fishing with his boys and finding new adventures over the next mountain. He was a member of Boardman United Methodist Church, where he served as Co Lay Leader. The prayers and acts of kindness from the church and pastor are too numerous to list.

Jim is survived by his wife the former Barbara Goldthwaite, whom he married June 10,1961; three sons, James Edward (Laurie Taylor) Lendon of Delaware, OH, David Ross (Darryl Colen) Lendon of Chicago, Gregory William (Patricia Barnes) Lendon of Marysville, OH;; three sisters, Dorothea (Stanley) Zupan of Cleveland, Jessica Smyth of Corpus Christi, TX, and Martha Lendon of Barnesville, OH; one brother, George (Candy Hunt) Lendon of Bethesda, OH; one brother-in-law, Ortho (Phyllis) Miller of IL; grandchildren, Nicole (Colin) Poulson of Columbus, Alexandra Lendon, Sophia Lendon, Allison and Audrey Williams of Delaware, OH; Tara, Patrick, and Gavin Lendon of Marysville, OH; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents Jim was preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude Lendon and Della Miller; one brother, Wilbur Lendon; and one brother-in-law, Warren Smyth.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 11:00AM at Boardman United Methodist Church.

Friends and family will be received prior to service 9:30 AM to 10:50 AM at the church.

The family is grateful to Brookdale Austintown for the loving way they cared for Jim and family. Hospice of the Valley provided compassion and dignity for Jim in his final transition.
