James Jarvis, 87, of Poland, died unexpectedly Thursday morning December 7, 2017 at his home. He was born May 28, 1930 in Webster Springs, West Virginia a son of Fred and Hattie (Hamric) Jarvis and came to the area as a child.
Mr. Jarvis was a graduate of Hubbard High School and received his undergraduate degree in education from Youngstown College, where he played basketball and football. Following his time in college, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He later earned his Master’s in Education from Westminster College. He had taught in Canfield and Youngstown school districts and retired as Assistant Superintendent of the Youngstown City School District.
He was an avid golfer, hunter, and enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and his “prized” yellow roses. He was a member of Poland United Methodist Church, and had been a longtime member of Youngstown Rotary. He was involved in several organizations including the American Cancer Society, and the Curbstone Coaches association.
His wife, the former Sally Quinn, whom he married August 27, 1955, died March 17, 2013. He leaves a daughter, Melissa (Ron) Smrek of Poland; three sons, James (Janice) Jarvis of Canfield, William (Colleen) of Springfield, Virginia, and Mark (Deborah) of Bedford, Ohio; Uncle Joe Quinn; nine grandchildren, Stephanie (Matt) Putzier, Andrew Jarvis, Shannon (Zach) Christoff, Brianna Smrek, Sarah Jarvis, Quinn Jarvis, Katelynd Jarvis, Molly Jarvis, and Patrick Jarvis. He also leaves a great-grandchild, Zachary Putzier.
Besides his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Lee Jarvis, and his grandson, James K. Jarvis Jr.
Services will be held 11:00 am Monday December 11, 2017 at the Poland United Methodist Church with Pastor Ken Gifford officiating . Friends may call Sunday from 5 pm – 8 pm at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks material contributions take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society, 525 North Broad Street, Canfield, Ohio or to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Boardman, Ohio 44512.
