James Wilson Baker, 82, of Youngstown, formerly of New Middletown, Ohio passed away July 12, 2012 at his home after a short fight with liver cancer.
Jim was born March 4, 1930 in Erwin, Tennessee, the son of John and Hattie Whaley-Baker.
During the early 1930's the family had moved to New Middletown, Ohio.
A 1948 graduate of Springfield Local High School, Jim retired from Youngstown Sheet and Tube/LTV. He was proud to be a 27 year Retired Veteran of the US Army and Army Reserves having served in Germany, Holland, Switzerland, and Italy during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Jim was a life member at large of the American Legion and the VFW.
Jim attended the Bridge of Hope Assembly of God Church in Boardman which was a large part of his life for over 40 years. He enjoyed helping people and doing what he could to enlighten their lives. Jim enjoyed hobbies of fishing, traveling and he loved to spend time with his family, especially his great-grandchildren, and friends.
Jim was preceded in death on May 20, 2012 by his wife of 56 years, Helen Scott-Baker whom he married June 5, 1955. He also was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen and her husband John Barrow and Louise and her husband Ronald Smith; and Great-Grandson Samuel Wilson Hoover.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Connie and her husband Dennis A. Higbee of Columbiana; granddaughter, Katherine Sunshine (Michael) Hoover; great-granddaughters, Leigthy Russell, Elizabeth Russell and Norah-Ann Grace Hoover; and great-grandson, Owen Hoover, all of Hamilton, Ohio. Grandson, Thomas James (Larra Miller) Higbee and great-grandson, Jesse James Higbee; granddaughter, Victoria (Christopher) Hudson; grandson, Jeremy (Amanda) Higbee; great-granddaughters, Heaven Grace and Skylynn Higbee; and great-grandson, Ethen Higbee, all of Columbiana. Nieces, Kathy (Don) Reash of Columbiana and Vickie Watson of Columbus; great-niece, Kristen Llewellyn of Columbiana; and great-nephew, Kevin Llewellyn of Los Angeles, California.
The family would like to express their love and appreciation for the incredible, wonderful care and compassion shown towards both, Jim and Helen, from MVI Hospice. Thank you for making their final days special.
Funeral services will be held Monday, 1:00 pm at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland with Pastor Rick Mason officiating. Interment will follow at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Boardman.
Friends may call Sunday from 4-7 PM and Monday from 12:00 pm until 12:45 pm at the funeral home.
