Poland - Jacob "Jack" Goodspeed, 61, died Friday, April 4, 2014 at the Hospice House after a courageous battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Jacob, affectionately known as "Jack," was born October 23, 1952 in Youngstown, a son of Gerald and Ann Marie Hovorsky Goodspeed.

He was a 1970 graduate of East High School. Jack began his career as a crane operator at Truscon Steel and then worked for Republic Engineered Steels in Massillon for 16 years. He later worked for DuFerco in Farrell, PA and most recently in apartment maintenance.

Some of Jack's favorite past times included going on family vacations to the beach, woodworking, and music. In his younger years, Jack played guitar in a band and continued playing later in life as a hobby. He was a jack-of-all trades and everyone's go to man when something needed fixed.

He is survived by his wife, the former Edie Anthonsen, whom he married February 17, 1973; daughter, Sarah (Robert) Halicky of Poland; sister, Karen (Joseph) Melikant of Greenville, SC; two brothers, Gerald (Susanne) Goodspeed of Youngstown and William (Carolann) Goodspeed of Poland; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, including Tim and Barb Byler of New Middletown, who he was especially close with; and a host of nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. A private funeral service will be held at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland. Entombment will be at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Jack's name to the Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Rd., Poland, OH 44514 or to the ALS Association of Northeastern Ohio, 6155 Rockside Rd., Independence, OH 44131.
