Struthers - J. Thomas Demeretz, 63 of Struthers, died Saturday, October 2, 2010, of a heart attack, while walking his American Cocker Spaniel, Alex.
Mr. Demeretz was born July 12, 1947 in Youngstown, a son of Joseph and Margaret Ignat Demeretz.
He was a 1965 graduate of Boardman High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Viet Nam. Following his return home, he received his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Youngstown State University. Mr. Demeretz worked for the MCTA program, and then as the Secretary, Treasurer and Fiscal Officer for the Western Reserve Transit Authority. He worked as a manager for Frattaroli's Sparkle Market, in Struthers and also at the New Middletown Store, and was known as "JD". Mr. Demeretz was a former member of St. Stephen of Hungary Church, where he was a member of its Holy Name Society. He was a member of the St. Paul the Apostle Church in New Middletown. He was member of the YMCA in Boardman, and followed his daughter's footsteps, and participated in his first triathlon on his 60th birthday. Mr. Demeretz loved archery, hunting, skydiving, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and most of all spending time with his family.
One of the most proudest and joyous moments in his life was walking his daughter, Stacey, down the isle this past Sept 18th. His glowing smile and radiant eyes is something that will always be treasured by his daughter, Stacey and the rest of his family.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, the former Harriett Cornell, whom he married May 11, 1974. Two sons, William Craven of Streetsboro and Paul (Lori) Demeretz of Hubbard; one daughter Stacey (Robert ) Senn of Austintown; a sister - Elizabeth (Fred) Hodos of Poland; 4 Grandchildren - Samantha, Joseph and Sarah Craven, and Lillian Demeretz; and his beloved dog, Alex.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a Great-Grandson, Isaiah Echols.
Family and friends will be received Tuesday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers, and also from 9:00 - 9:45 Wednesday at the St. Paul the Apostle Church in New Middletown, where a Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am with Fr. Bob Bonnot, officiating. Interment will follow at the Lake Park Cemetery.
