Poland - Irene S. Lapin, 84, of Poland, died April 29, 2010 at the St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman.
Irene was born to the late Andrew and Mary Nemcik Zelinsky, January 5, 1926 in Struthers. Irene graduated from Struthers High School and Youngstown Business College. She married the love of her life, the late John J. "JL" Lapin on October 27, 1945.
Irene was a member of the Holy Family Church in Poland. Irene had a circle of great friends with whom she and "JL" enjoyed spending time. She cherished her life-long friendships with her high school girlfriends, and always enjoyed attending the Struthers-North Side reunions, where she was famous for her kolachi. She and JL had great fun with the "Cruise Club" and spent many hours laughing about their antics during their travels. She was a member of the Poland Women's Garden Club and was an avid golfer. She played in the Jednota Women's League and the Rolling Hills Women's League and was known for always hitting the ball straight, her hole-in-one at Rolling Hills, and the cart she landed in the pond.
Irene was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her memory will be treasured by those who survive her including her daughter, Sally Lapin of Poland; her son, John (Natalie) Lapin of Poland; her grandson, Jared Lapin of Seattle, WA, and her son-in-law, Carl Merritt of Garland, TX.
Besides her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, John "JL" Lapin; her daughter, Sandy Merritt; three brothers, Andrew, Steve and Matt Zelinsky, and four sisters; Mary Spontak, Kay Lenton, Helen Stanton and Hilda Sadler.
Family and friends will be received Monday from 4-7pm at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, where prayers will be offered Tuesday at 9:30 am. Funeral services will be conducted at the Holy Family Church Tuesday, at 10:00 am with Rev. Msgr. William J. Connell officiating. Interment will follow at the Poland Riverside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations toward the Nativity Set, may be made in Irene's name to the Holy Family Church, 2729 Center Road, Poland OH 44514.
