Irene Johnson, age 88, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2016 in Columbiana, OH, surrounded by her family. She died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Elven A. “Johnny” Johnson, Jr. Irene is survived by three children, Steven L. Johnson of Columbiana, Deborah S. Johnson of Santa Fe, NM, and Richard E. Johnson and his wife Colleen of Hamilton, VA; and two granddaughters, Bethany A. Wester and Emily A. Johnson.
Irene’s family line migrated from Puerto Rico to Mexico and then to Hawaii. When the 1917 Flu Epidemic devastated Hawaii, the extended family moved to Oakland, CA, where she was born in 1927. She is the last surviving sibling of 16 children born to her parents, Hellen and Raymond Montalbo.
Irene had a 30 year career with the Federal Civil Service in the USA and abroad—starting at age 18 and retiring in her 70s. She and Johnny explored the world while he worked overseas as an engineer. She returned from Egypt alone after Johnny suddenly passed away in 1987. For 20 more years, she enjoyed a productive life in Tequesta, Florida.
Irene imposed her life force on her illness, only allowing it to quiet her sense of humor and energetic, engaging character. She loved and respected her children and grandchildren, was a devoted wife and was active in community service throughout her life. Her giving heart was generous and caring. To the end, she smiled at jokes, winked in recognition and proclaimed her contempt for her circumstances.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Betsy Johnson, St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center and All Caring Hospice, LLC for their compassionate, generous and experienced care for Irene during her long illness.
A private burial ceremony will be held at a later date for Irene to join Johnny’s final resting place in Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the All Care Hospice Memorial Foundation in Mrs. Johnson's name are gratefully accepted and can be mailed to, 6715 Tippecanoe Rd, Canfield, OH 44406. The family thanks you all for your lovely condolences and kind sentiments!
Arrangements are being handled by the Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman.
