Struthers- Howard "Howie" J. Hird, 58, died unexpectedly, Saturday, July 11, 2015 at his home.
Howard, affectionately known as "Howie," was born April 8, 1957 in Youngstown, a son of Robert and Helen Kearney Hird.
A graduate of Struthers High School, Howie worked for LTV which later became International Steel Group where he was a millwright.
He was a member of Mahoning Sportmen's Association. In his free time, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle and taking care of his land. Howie had a passion for learning, taking as much knowledge in as he could, and could often be found watching learning shows on TV.
A big man, Howie's size intimidated many, but once you talked to him it was obvious that he was a teddy bear with a soft heart. He was a kind man and always willing to help anyone in need. After his brother Donald passed away, Howie took in his nephew, Leon, and helped raise him and give him guidance. Howie had a wonderful sense of humor, always making everyone feel at ease with his playful sarcasm and wit.
He is survived by his three daughters, Cierra (Mason) Hornyak, Helen-Marie Hird, and Marissa Hird, all of Struthers; three brothers, Robert (Marilee) Hird Jr. of Youngstown, John "Jack" Hird of Poland, and William "Boyd" (Carol) Hird of Poland; sister, Virginia "Sis" Hird of Youngstown; three grandchildren, Ayden, Julia, and Leland; his nephew, Leon Hird and many other special nieces and nephews; and his companion of many years, Karen Sacco of Ellwood City, PA.
In addition to his parents, Howie was preceded in death by his son, Justin Mistovich; two brothers, Edward "Kook" Hird and Donald Hird; and a sister-in-law, Susan Hird.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St., Struthers. Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. and Wednesday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
