Youngstown - Howard "Sam" Conley, 98, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on June 6, 2024.
Sam was born December 7, 1925 in Long Run, WV, a son of the late Peter and Lina (Riffle) Conley. He graduated from Burnsville High School, class of 1945, and proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He then worked as a truck driver for Greif Brothers Corporation until his retirement after 40 years of service. Not content to sit around after retiring, he then worked an additional 13 years for Vinyl Profiles.
He was an amazing man who loved his family dearly. He was always even keeled, quiet, and reserved, but when he had something to say, everyone listened. He had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed joking around with those he loved. He played the guitar and loved music, especially bluegrass. He coached baseball for his son in his younger years, and cheered on the New York Yankees & Cleveland Indians.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of over 70 years, the former Barbara Lockard, whom he married March 20, 1954; his daughters, Kathy Vegso of Canfield, Janet Conley of Columbiana, and Amy Knauf of Canfield; his son, Jerry Conley of Youngstown; grandchildren, Jeff (Courtnie) Vegso, Erin (Kyle) Dickey, Hannah and Hunter Knauf; great-grandchild, Claire Dickey; his sister, Kathelene Conrad of Burnsville, WV; as well as his 2 nieces and other extended family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Conley, son-in-law, Randy Vegso, a nephew and brother-in-law.
Per Sam's wishes, there will be no formal calling hours or services, and he will be laid to rest at the Little Kanawha Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, WV.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Patriot Home Care for their compassionate care of Sam in his time of need.
