Boardman- Herman F. Gutierrez, 85, died early Sunday morning, January 25, 2015 at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Herman was born November 24, 1929 in Youngstown, a son of Jose and Eusebia Gutierrez of Alconada, Spain. He was a 1950 graduate of Chaney High School, where he earned All-City Series honors in football. After serving in the Army in Germany, he returned to Youngstown to become the president of Youngstown Grinding Service, the business founded by his father and shared with his brothers Joseph and the late Angelo. He continued to work until his recent illness.
He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Boardman, the Westside Merchants and Centro Hispano Moderno in Youngstown.
Herman enjoyed boating, fishing, skiing, poker, gardening, and hosting memorable family Christmas parties in his basement. He and his wife were longtime season ticket holders and cowbell-wielding fixtures at Boardman Spartan football games. He was a loving "papa" and grandpa to his five grandchildren.
He leaves his wife of 57 years, the former Betty Yakubov of Campbell,Ohio; a son, Dr. James (Patty) Gutierrez of Bay Village, Ohio; a daughter, Beth (Mark) McHugh of Dublin, Ohio; five grandchildren: Andrew, Emma, and Ellie Gutierrez, and Abigail and Alyssa McHugh; a sister, Lena (Frank) Nardella of Youngstown; and a brother, Joseph Gutierrez of Youngstown.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Gutierrez was preceded in death by two sisters, Carmen Aguilar and Pilar Ross; and a brother, Angelo Gutierrez.
A prayer service will be held Friday at 9:15 a.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
Family and friends will be received Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
