Austintown - Herbert James MacDonald, 85, died Wednesday afternoon, January 4, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Mr. MacDonald was born August 27, 1931 in Youngstown, OH, son of Emery and Elva Hoover MacDonald.
A lifelong area resident, Herbert attended Woodrow Wilson High School. After high school, he was drafted into United States Army and served during the Korean War from 1953 until being honorably discharged in 1955. Herbert loved his country and was a very proud veteran.
After the war, he returned to the area and began working in the steel mills. Throughout the course of his career, he was employed by Standard Pipe, Youngstown Sheet & Tube, and Wean United. While working in the mills, Mr. MacDonald also owned and operated his own landscaping company and contracted with several area companies.
He was a member of the Woodworth Church of the Brethren.
Herbert was a dedicated family man and loved spending time with them. In his free time, he enjoyed meticulously manicuring his yard, watching football, especially the Ohio State Buckeyes, woodworking, and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, the former Marie Lipp, whom he married June 14, 1958; two sons, David (Audrey) MacDonald of Youngstown and Herbert M. (Sarah) MacDonald of Huntington Beach, CA; four grandchildren, Becky Westhead, and James and Marshall MacDonald, all of Youngstown, and Lincoln MacDonald of Huntington Beach, CA; and one great-grandchild, Gage Wimer.
In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by his son, Robert MacDonald; sister, Betty Zugay; and brother, Emery MacDonald.
A funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and Monday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
Although flowers are beautiful, the family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mr. MacDonald's name to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
